Sue and Rich make two or three trips to India each year, choosing each stone themselves and overseeing the setting of each piece. Because of the close working relationship with the artisans, Padma Trading can ensure that working conditions are good and a fair wage is paid.
The Indian craftsmen work in a large modern factory in a comfortable environment with good light and air conditioning. The factory is run in a Western way with strict safety procedures. Training is provided in the factory and progress is possible within the company. Care is taken with employee happiness and jobs are guaranteed. There is certainly no child labour. We have occasionally arrived unannounced and found conditions to be true. Ethics are an important part of life for Sue and Rich and, since the business began, it has been possible for Padma Trading to support several charity events. We support a charity at home, the British Institute for Brain Injured Children (BIBIC).
